I was commissioned to recreate Doman for the Castle of Good Hope in Capetown. He stands with 3 other leaders from our history. Kings Cetshwayo, Langalibalele, Sekhukhune and Khoi fighter, Doman were once incarcerated at the castle for leading wars of resistance against Dutch and British rule. And here they stand together.
Doman started the first KhoiKhoi/Dutch war against the Dutch and Jan van Riebeeck in the 1650's. For information about these 4 historical characters please click this link.
It was commissioned to show an aspect of the Castles history.
“We are honouring those who dared to challenge colonialism, those who dared to challenge oppression, slavery. Those who challenged the brutal system of torture, you know that where we are right next to the torture chambers of the time and we are honouring our leaders who dared to challenge that entire system,” said Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
The first version of Doman is part of the Long March to Freedom in Fountains Valley, Brooklyn, Pretoria. To view this version and find out more about this impressive project click here.
