This sculpture is of a small family of Dassies. I spent some time watching and enjoying their characteristics, although they do seem to spend a lot of time sitting or lying around in the sun, or nibling at vegetation. They can become quite tame if around humans for extended periods of time, but are usually shy in the wild, dashing off into a rock crevice just as they are spotted.
There seems to be always one, watching. Their large dark eyes can be quite unnerving after a while. They can be seen from coastal to mountainous areas all around South Africa.
