This sculpture was commissioned for St Alban’s College, Pretoria, South Africa.

This sculpture represents the St Alban’s schoolboy standing strong as a guardian of truth. St Alban’s is an all-boys Christian high school with a deeply rooted ethos, and the figure embodies the values of faith, conviction, and integrity that lie at the heart of the school.

The young guardian stands on a slanted platform, symbolising life and its challenges. Despite the instability beneath him, he remains firm in his beliefs, ethos, and commitment to truth.

The sword, drawn from the school’s coat of arms, is a central symbol in the work. While it is no longer an object commonly carried in the modern world, it continues to represent the struggle to uphold truth. At the same time, its form echoes the Christian cross, reinforcing the spiritual foundation of the school.

He extends the sword forward like a baton, symbolically offering it to the boys of St Alban’s to take up during their years at the school and carry with them into the wider world beyond.
