For more years than anyone can remember, Skabenga ruled The Oyster Box Hotel. As one of the few pet-friendly hotels in South Africa, The Oyster Box welcomed Skabenga—a stray tabby cat who arrived “uninvited” and chose to make the hotel his permanent home. Skabenga, captured the hearts of guests from around the world and became a cherished symbol of the hotel.

Following his passing on 12 March 2025, I was commissioned to create a life-size bronze sculpture in his honour. His many collars, gifted by admirers over the years, are preserved within the statue’s resin base by artist Erica van Eck, forming a meaningful and personal memorial.

A QR code on the base invites visitors to donate to the Durban & Coast SPCA, allowing Skabenga’s legacy of kindness to live on. You can also donate by scanning the QR code.
